The theory of Yin-Yang and the Five Phrases, as a fundamental cognitiveconcept of the ancient Chinese about the universe and the natural phenomena, plays an important part in the Chinese culture. This theory not only refers to theinteraction of the five elements Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth, but alsorepresents the relationship among the Five Colors. The concept of the FiveColors, just like those of the Five Directions, the Five Tones and the FiveSeasons, is the derivative of the theory of the Five Phrases. It reflects Chineseunique theory of the universe, perspective on life and idea about art.Compared to Western scientific colorific system, the one of the ancientChinese is philosophical, based on the interaction among the five elementsand the contract between Yin and Yang.In the Song Dynasty, the Taoism with the Five Phrases was so popular that ithad great influence on the Green and Gold Paintings. Its philosophicalfoundation of colors was based on the theory of Yin-Yang and the FivePhrases from Taoism. As representative, the painting Rivers and Mountains ofThousands of Miles was not depicting the inherent colors of the natural objects,or depicting the conditional colors under some specific circumstances, orentirely showing the abstract colors with black and white of water and ink. Thepainting presented the aesthetic idea of the Taoist Five Colors and thesymbolic and expressive meaning of the colors. It showed the conceptualcolors with semiotic character. From the aesthetic angle of the Five Colors, theauthor is attempting to explore the aesthetic nature of the Five Colors and theemotional root presented in the painting Rivers and Mountains of Thousands ofMiles, in order to further study other Green and Gold Landscape Paintings inthe Song Dynasty.
