| Li Hua (1907-1994) is one of the great leaders of New Woodblock Prints Movement, and also a very important print-maker, art historian and art educationist. In his life, Li created a number of wood block prints, illustrations, comic strips, ink and wash paintings, bookplates, sketches and calligraphies with many monographs and articles published in all kinds of newspapers and magazines, and worked as an art educator for over54years. My thesis focuses on his print teaching and aesthetic thought.First, this essay researches and discusses three parts:Li Hua’s prints, his idea of art education and the foundation of his thought. I think, the development of the idea of his creation is influenced by the social conditions in his era, and related to Lu Xun’s art idea and the flourishing New Woodblock Prints Movement in Modern China. In addition, his great amount of prints and a long working experience as an art educator give him an incisive comprehension, systematic idea and clear thought on the nature, skills and education of printmaking. This essay focuses on the interpretation of Li Hua’s printmaking teaching ideas, through the discussion of the arrangements and methods of his printmaking teaching including the basis of modeling, professional printmaking skills and practices. Finally, I’ll summarize the impacts of Li Hua’s educational thought and printmaking practices, as well as his contribution to the art history, and the enlightenment he brought to today’s printmaking teaching. As Li Hua’s educational thought is rich and valuable, I hope to bring some reference and inspiration to the research on the current prints teaching through a comprehensive study and interpretation of his teaching ideas on printmaking. |
