In recent years, more and more food manufacturers in China attach Englishinstructions to the food labeling in order to promote their products. However, the qualityof these translations varies considerably, which results in unreadable texts and violationof the original purpose. As a pillar translation theory of functionalism in Germany,Skopostheorie plays a significant and instructive role in the practice of application texttranslation. This paper tries to apply the Skopostheorie into English translation ofChinese food labeling, from the view of text typology, reclassifying the present Chinesefood labeling according to various functions, exploring the translation strategies ofdifferent texts through authentic cases, making a comparison between “function” and“intention”, summarizing the corresponding translation strategies for each situation.Based on all of these, a translation process for Chinese-English translation of foodlabeling will be formulated.
