As one of the most representative creations of the Chinese people,the function of Chinese characters is not only recording language, butalso representing its culture while recording the culture itself. Nowadaysscholars pay much more attention to the association between Chinesecharacters and culture, so the exploring of the relationship betweenChinese characters and folk culture becomes especially necessary. Thisarticle mainly analyses one practical subject in the research field ofChinese character culture, which is the role that folk culture plays ininterpreting and memorizing Chinese characters.The folk character itself is not a new concept, but both the scopeand content are always confusing and have no proper definition. In thisessay folk character is defined as a special form of Chinese characters,the variation of standard Chinese characters. Compared with thestandard Chinese characters, it has differences in the form, which is dueto the variety of folk factors, such as writing carrier, writing tools, writingpsychology, folk beliefs and the purpose of writing and etc. It is alsocalled the generalized folk characters. In a narrow sense, the Chinesecharacters only means the synthesis of folk custom, which is acombination of Chinese characters, it is more commonly used in folk,skillfully to combine two or more words together, with the moral ofshunning evil omens.The study on folk character is eventually to help researchingChinese characters itself, which also helps us do better in textualcriticism, interpretation, learning and memorizing Chinese characters.From this sense, the analysis of the effect that folk culture has ininterpretation and memorizing Chinese characters is indispensableresearch content, which is also the value of writing the paper. Thisarticle sorts out the value that folk culture has in researching Chinese characters step by step from three aspects, the feasibility ofinterpretation and memorizing Chinese characters with folk culture, themethod of doing so and the effect that folk culture has in interpretationand memorizing Chinese characters. In the first part of the discussion ofthe feasibility, based mainly on three angles as worship and folk, glyphand folklore, Chinese characters and folk culture internal consistency,pointed out the close relationship between Chinese characters and folkculture. The second part selected some character cases to analyzeand based on this, concluded how to use folk culture to explicate andmemory Chinese characters. Part three is the focus of this article, whichdetailed explained the role that folk culture plays in interpretation ofmemorizing Chinese characters, as background material, in a variety offorms of participation, attract attention to efficiency and pass culture.Since the folk culture is a special character, this paper separatelyanalyzed the folk characters and Chinese characters for scientificreasons, making the thesis theme more prominent, also make sure theparticularity of folklore characters won’t be ignored.In a word, the innovation is the preliminary definition of folkcharacter study on the scope, content, features and objects, as well asthe role that folk culture plays in interpretation and memorizing Chinesecharacters from these two views: Chinese characters and folkcharacter partly widened the field of the study of Chinese characters.
