Fei Ming is a unique writer in China’s modern literature history, and in the mean timehe is a lonely writer. His loneliness derived from the special characteristics of his novel—deliberate obscurity of style and expression. Fei Ming’s novel is full of new conception andnovelty. His pioneering works on Chinese novel style is quite remarkable. However, in therecent eighty years, he is only looked as a supplementary person of the literary world. Onthe one hand, he is looked as a successor of the grass-roots literature; and on the other hand,he is looked as a pioneer of the literature of Beijing School. He exerted a tremendousinfluence in Mr. Shen Congwen and Mr. Wang Zengqi, etc. From my perspective, Fei Minghas his own writing style, which makes him special to the world. He is one of theoutstanding writers in his contemporaries. So far there is not enough evidence to prove that Fei Ming has been influenced by thewestern modernist, such as Marcel Proust or James Joyce. When I read Fei Ming’snovels, I can not help thinking of Marcel Proust or James Joyce. I found that thereare so many coincidences existing in their works. Although they own the differentculture and different countries, they still have so many similarities in the style andstructure of their novels.Fei Ming showed his remarkable endowments in writing when he faced the trendat his time. He was deeply influenced by the profound Chinese classic culture andtried to express his own spirit in a new way of western style. We can say that, FeiMing’s choice was wise and remarkable, although it seems to us a little unique andisolated.
