"jane Eyre" In The 20th Century, Chinese Classic Of Construction And The Reform Of The Heroine's Image

Up to now, there are no doubts that Jane Eye has become one canon in our country.However, its canonization course of the20thcentury in China is not even. The fortune ofJane Eyre in the last century is the clue to this paper. Then, Even Zohar’s elaboration ofcanonization in his Poly-system Theory is used as the theory perspective, to probe into theprocess of medio-translation and acceptance of Jane Eyre in different periods in the20thcentury and to analyze influences of social cultures on the novel’s literary status.Meanwhile, the other focus of this paper is to investigate Jane Eyre’s images in translatedbooks and critical articles, and expound reasons of the evolution of her images.In the preface, the status quo of similar research topics is summarized, and theories andmethods used in the paper are introduced as well. Then, to explore the ups and downs ofJane Eyre’s fate and the change of its literary status in its homeland, social cultures andcriticism from scholars of Britain during the1840s to the end of the20thcentury arecenters of discussion in Chapter One. According to the20thsocial morphologicalcharacteristics of our country, the course of Jane Eyre’s canonization is divided into threephases in Chapter Two, namely,1935-1948(the novel’s canonization),1949-1976(thenovel’s de-canonization) and1977-1999(the novel’s re-canonization). Next, Jane Eyre’smedio-translation and acceptance in these periods, and influence factors on those situationsare assayed. Later, in Chapter Three, the general image of Jane Eyre in Chinese-translatedbooks is introduced firstly. And then, to be expected to depict the pedigree chart of ourfemale protagonist’s image change, translations of Wu Guangjian, Li Jiye and ZhuQingying and paratexts of them, as well as essays about Jane Eyre in periodicals arecompared with each other and explored. In Chapter Four, the theory of canonization ofEven Zohar is introspected, basing on the case study in this thesis. The conclusion part isthe summary of the full text.
