Demonstrative Pronoun The Indicating Function Of Research

Demonstrative pronouns can substitute different parts of speech and have the same grammatical functions of the parts of speech they substituted. The meaning of a demonstrative pronoun can be defined only in contexts. It manifests as the fact that the pronouns’referring object can be identified only in a whole context. So two of demonstrative pronouns’important functions are discourse cohesion function and deixical function. This thesis is to analyze the deixis of demonstrative pronouns systematically based on written corpus. The thesis includes four chapters.Introduction. In this part, we introduce the current situation of demonstrative pronouns research and the research method of this thesis.Cataphora function of demonstrative pronouns. A demonstrative pronoun has two kind of deixical functions, namely, direct function and indirect function. Indirect function includes cataphora and anaphora. Close terms often indicate the meaning of suggestion and conclusion while distal terms explain. The cataphora function of a demonstrative pronoun refers to its substitution of the contextual content. It is still a important means of discourse connection.Anaphora function of demonstrative pronouns. It contains explicit anaphora and implicit anaphora. This part first examines explicit function of demonstrative pronouns from the properties of antecedents. There are two kind of explicit anaphoras, namely sentence elements anaphora and sentence anaphora, the former refers to words and phrases, the later refers to sentences and discourses. It then examines implicit anaphora from the relationship between antecedent and anaphor. There are various relationships between anaphor and antecedent, such as inclusion relationship, associated relationship, causality, abstract summary. The indirect deixical function of demonstrative pronouns is an important means of discourse cohesion. It makes context a whole with semantic coherence and makes the whole language expression more brief and tight. It is the reflect of language’s economical efficiency.Epilogue.
