The relationship between form and meaning is a basic issue in the second language teaaching field, and it has gained increasing disscussions in the west. However, little theoretical work has been done in teaching Chinese as a second language teaching field.Based on the "focus on form" theory of Long M.H. and three types of involvement of a grammatical structure in a task, which was distinguished by Loschky&Bley-Vroman, we are going to discuss the relationship between form and meaning from six dimensions in the textbooks aspect, and furthermore, build an examining system for it.Six grammar items and37texts from three textbooks were selected as main objects for this study.103foreign students who study Chinese in Fudan University and Tongji University took part in the reasearch of the common characteristics of textbook topics.43Chinese native speakers were the participants of the naturalness and the essentialness of strucurtes investigation. The data collected was examined by Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient.According to the research, the three textbooks performed well in naturalness of structures, concentration of topics, and the salience of structures. However, the common characteristics of textbook topics need more attention to be paid. It shows that, the grammar items differ a lot in essentialness of strucurtes, probably because of the features of the structers themselves.A good positive correlation is found between the form and meaning, indicating that they can keep a balance between them in a high level. Finally, some suggestions are presented in improving the balance between structures and texts.
