This thesis focuses on the Jing’an District of Shanghai from1862to1949based on the two levels of the development of urban roads and urban lands by using the methods of historical geography and GIS to illustrate the process of urbanization of Jing’an District in modern times. To analyze the spatial expansion process and distribution characteristics of different types of plots of Jing’an District, this thesis use the base map "Old Shanghai road mechanism manufacturers housing distribution map" to show the process of modern urbanization more specifically in a larger resolution.Transformed from traditional river villages into city center, the urbanization of Jing’ an District was leaded by building roads cross the border which did by concession to develop the urban road network and transform the river network. Jing’ an District was once in the situation of tripartite condominium in modern times, with the International Settlement and French Concession have been involved in, the urbanization process is basically carried out under the influence of the concession forces. Since the concession encouraging mixed residence, a substantial increase in population making a large number of residential constructions built in the area. Meanwhile with the Suzhou River and Caojiadu water conditions in the north and Nanjing West Road Commercial Street in the south, the commerce and industry is also gradually developed and flourishes gradually. In the constant improvement of urban roads and urban buildings constructing from east to west, Jing’an District finally completed the transition from agricultural land to urban land.
