Xinhua Xiehouyu Dictionary Of Xiehouyu Semantic Analysis

The two-part allegorical saying is an unique class to the Han nationality,and it reflects the thinking and culture of the Han nationality, which is of the masses. Inherited and developed through people’s verbal communication, it is the crystallization of people’s collective wisdom, and the essence of the Chinese.This article is based on Xinhua Two-part Allegorical Saying Dictionary edited by Wen Duanzheng. The typical two-part allegorical sayings have been selected as our research objects.First, we analyse the statute meaning of the two-part allegorical sayings, and classify them into five types:endicating-semantics,metaphor, describing-semantics,,expressing-semantics and meaning-combined. We sum up the paraphrasing patterns of every type of the two-part allegorical saying. There are four typical paraphrasing patterns.Second, we divide the two-part allegorical sayings into two major categories according to semantic association mode of the former and latter of the two-part allegorical sayings:the sentence associated and the words associated. Each category is divided into several subclasses. We generalize several paraphrasing patterns of each subclass from this angle.Then, we analyze the emotional significance of the two-part allegorical sayings, which is the most important connotative meaning.Through statistics, we have found that, the two-part allegorical sayings with ridiculed meaning and scolding meaning is the major part of the entire system. The two-part allegorical sayings reflect the speaker’s attitude and image.Finally, we briefly discuss the formation and comprehension mechanism of the two-part allegorical sayings by employing the metaphor, metonymy and conceptual blending theory.In this paper, the theoretical values include:from two perspectives,the two-part allegorical sayings are classified and several paraphrasing patterns are summed up. We that the most connotative meaning are the ridiculed meaning and scolding meaning, is pointed out.The two-part allegorical sayings are interpreted through the employment of some related theory in cognitive Linguistics. All those,will provide help for further study. The application value is that, it can help people understand and ise the two-part allegorical sayings better. And also, it will provide help to exicography.
