Chu Wanghua, born in Yixing, Jiangsu province, is an outstanding composer and pianist, livingin Australia. When he was young, he began to love music and show more than ordinary talent for it. In1952, he was admitted to the accessorial school of Center Music Institute with excellent scores and hismajor was piano. During studying, he often combines simple harmonics with familiar tones so that hisinterest was changed into the major of composing. In1958, he was admitted to ComposingDepartment with excellent performance again. While studying the skills of composing hard, he beganhis real musical creation. In1963and in1964, he succeeded creating Sky in Librated Areas and Daysof Standing Up respectively. After that, he created more great works and held a concert of his owncompositions. In June,1982, Mr. Chu got further education in University of Melbourne. Then in1985,he achieved two master degrees of composing and piano with excellent performance. In the respect ofcomposing, he created a series of great works with Chinese characteristics, drawing on the experienceof western composing skills and combining with characteristics of Chinese traditional music. Hemakes great contribution to China’s piano cause. So this thesis mainly studies Seven Chinese FolkSongs, Mr. Chu’s piano solo arrangements. This thesis mainly talks about it from these aspects asfollows:Chapter one An Overview of Mr.Chu and his piano solo arrangements.It includes three aspects: brief account of Mr.Chu and his creation experience, introduction to hispiano solo arrangements and the background of Seven Chinese Folk Songs and works.Chapter two Creation Characteristics of Seven Chinese Folk Songs, Mr. Chu’s piano soloarrangementsThis part analyzes Seven Chinese Folk Songs mainly from national techniques of harmonics,nationalization of texture, turns of national tonality, polyphony’s technique and musical structure. InSeven Chinese Folk Songs, he blended characteristics of Chinese national tradition into westerntraditional techniques which were learned by him in order to make it with characteristics of Chinesenationalization.Chapter three Analyze of main performing skills and teaching of Seven Chinese Folk SongsThe thesis analyses the teaching with focus on performing techniques of Seven Chinese FolkSongs including diphonia, grace note, octave, chord and musical scale of Pentatonic melodies.Chapter four National Timber and Key-touching of Seven Chinese Folk SongsThis part focuses on four aspects as follows: stimulating aria in the way of key-touching in pianoperforming, shape characteristic singing of folk songs, factors of operas, national musical instruments.
