Corot, a French painter lived in19th century, was well known today. His figurative painting was the object I discussed in this article. Before moving on to the discussion, I introduced some back ground information first:there were many other important artists living in the same time as Corot; they had very different art style and opinions; and the competition and confliction among them was quite obvious. The information revealed some clue of Corot’s mind of art creation. In the second chapter, by looking over Corot’s oeuvre, we could see the importance of his figurative painting. And I sorted his figurative painting into Sketch in Italy, Portrait of Family and Friends, and Independent Creation. After that, I discussed the feature of Corot’s observation method, which was closely related with his practice of landscape sketch, because that practice allowed him to gain the capability to represent the space and light in a very natural way. In the following chapter, I discussed the unique aesthetic perception of Corot’s figurative painting by analyzing the way he controlling the shape, the balance between his light and shape, the way he presenting volume in space, and the way he describing the figure’s spirit. In chapter five, I discussed Corot’s painting approach and his observation method, and I thought his approach was a directly conveyance of his observation. Base on all the discussion, I came with the conclusion:if we want to apprise Corot’s figurative painting properly, we must comprehend his observation method, because the harmonious in his figurative painting was come from his unique observation and the assorted painting approach.
