| Clara Schumann (1819-1896) is one of the most accomplished German composer who wasextraordinary in both piano pedagogy and composition. Her continuous support of RobertSchumann, as well as her efforts of promoting Schuman’s music have earned her a prominentposition among the greatest female artists of the Western world. Although Clara Schumann reachedthe panicle of her career but her personal life was filled with suffering and pain. And yet, she wasinspired to compose under those circumstances. What stylistic and emotional characteristics do hercompositions reflect? This author attempts to find answers by first surveying the musical life ofClara Schumann, then placing the focus on the Two Romances for piano. This article gives theanalytical details regarding the performance and teaching aspects of the Two Romances, providingcomprehensive view of Clara Schumann’s unique compositional style, her sense of beauty, as wellas her of life. Ultimately, all elements combined for a broader theoretical ground.There are four (4) chapters in this thesis: Chapter I (1) is an overview of Clara Schumann’smusical life with an emphasis on her career as a pianist, composer, teacher among other roles, aswell as establishing her as a ordinary woman.Chapter II (2) explores the works Clara Schumann composed in association with the Romanticperiod, summarizing the characteristic of the romanticism, thus to reveal how real life impactedClara’s music. Chapter III (3) is devoted to the detailed compositional analysis and givesconclusions of specific qualities which Clara Schumann signifies.The final chapter highlights the issues involving technical challenges and music choices concerningperforming the Two Romance.The research methods of this study include reading publications of historical importance,analysis of the composition, as well as hands-on practices. Eventually, obtaining a better anddeeper understanding of Clara Schuman and her music. |
