Spaceis not only a physical space, but more importantly it is a social space. As a resultof the people’s practice, the space turn to a social space.Space is a dialectic, productivity and relational space rather than a static andempty container. The Space that people involved in is filled with a variety ofpower relations, which fight against each other. With the social interpretation ofspace, we can recognize the power game in the space. Art Space is a form ofspace, it is divided into art performance space and exhibition space. Art is notcompletely self-disciplined, it is influenced by various factors. Furthermore, bothart performance space and art exhibition space involved in the production ofspace, which contains power relations. With the help of space theory in the west, the study of social space isextended to the art space, which attempts to discuss the space variation of the newmedia art from traditional art, as well as the changes of power relations amongthem. The thesis consists of three chapters. The first chapter is mainly discusses"space and the power". Firstly, the meaning of space and space theory aresummarized, secondly, discusses the relationship between space and power, finally, use the theory of social space to discuss the artistic production of space. The second chapter discusses the traditional art space and powerdistribution. The first part focuses on traditional art performance space and thedistribution of power, perspective space is not just a fantasy space, a symbolicspace, which is characterized by the power relations between the artists and theaudience, that the artist hegemonic position and the audience succumb. Thesecond part deals with the traditional art exhibition space and the distribution ofpower, the traditional art exhibition space is a closed space, it not only shows anelite culture, but also demonstrates the power of political, bourgeois prominentself tools. The third chapter mainly discusses the space and the power distributionof new media art. The traditional art performance space is a static, one-waytransmission space, and new media art performance space is a flowing, interactiveand virtual space. From the traditional arts to new media arts, as an object, performing space gradually eroding the subject (the artist and the audience), notonly is the subject exhibit space, space also build itself contains the subject’sspace in the same way. On the exhibition space, new media art take theinheritance and subversion strategy. For the audience, the traditional art exhibitionspace is full of discipline and restraint, which requires the audience’s attention, while the new media art exhibition space is a more free and open space, thatsatisfies the relax requirement of the audience. Changes on exhibition space alsoproduced a new power relations. On the one hand, new media art gingerly andslowly creep into the collapse of the public, it disrupted the traditional eliteculture’s hegemony as well as disenchanted the "aura" of the art. On the other hand, the commercial capital gradually settled in the new media art exhibitionspace, which affected the logic of the exhibition space in a certain extent.
