Currently, the development of the human spirit tends to return to the life-world. As a social practice activity for the purpose of constructing a successful spiritual world, the classroom teaching should approach the life-world to concern about people’s life meaning and value.This study aims to explore undistorted communication approaching life-world and its impacts on learners in RICH classroom teaching through a case study, narrative inquiry and ethnography as methodology. Specifically, this study attempts to reveal the value oriented RICH classroom teaching, which can be divided into the following three research questions:1) What is the nature of RICH classroom teaching?2) How does RICH education explore undistorted communication which is approaching life-world?3) What impacts of such undistorted communication have on the learners?This study, which lasts for a whole academic year from October2009to June2010, explores the classroom teaching practice under the Course of Basic English for the freshmen class095and their instructor Hope. To ensure the authenticity and reliability, this study adopts a variety of authentic data, derived from classroom observation, interviews, transcripts, field notes, learners’portfolios, journals. On the basis of the data. a series of interrelated stories named’approaching to the life-world’ have been formed.Through employing the concept of life-world in phenomenology, sociology and education as its philosophical foundation, focusing on Habermas’view of the life-world and his undistorted communication as the theoretical basis, undistorted communication in RICH classroom teaching has been explored so that five revealing ways of classroom teaching value in RICH are identified:1) Teaching as a whole person:honoring the diversity of learners;2) Teaching as being:back to life-world:3) Teaching as truth:listening to the true voice:4) Teaching as goodness:empowerment to change;5) Teaching as beauty:small things matter. The main findings show that the teacher as the leadership based on classroom teaching empowers the students to make a choice freely for change so that the undistorted consciousness is aroused and developed in classroom interaction; the life-world between teacher-student and student-student is touched and expanded; the life meaning and life value is reflected and transcended.Based on the exploration of RICH classroom teaching practice, this paper provides an alternative way of analyzing and understanding the teaching value of undistorted communication in foreign language classroom teaching in order to put forward more thinking about classroom teaching practice approaching life-world.
