As was stipulated in Standard of English Curriculum,“the primary mission of the Englisheducation in basic education is to foster and stimulate pupils’ interest in English, bolsterpupils’ confidence in learning English, help pupils develop effective approaches and learninghabits, enabling pupils to obtain a basic possession of English language skills, namelylistening, speaking, reading and writing, and enhancing the pupils’ comprehensive ability inusing English...” It follows that the core task of English teaching is to enhance pupils’comprehensive ability in using English.According to the theory of multiple intelligences, which has been advanced by HowardGardner, everyone owns eight kinds of intelligences. As the intelligences are combined indifferent ways, the learning approaches of individuals vary. The significance of the theory liesin its focus on individuality, which echoes the essence of The Standard of English Curriculum. With the guidance of the theory of multiple intelligences, teachers can find the differences andcharacters of the individuality and improve the teaching quality. To test the effect of the theory of multiple intelligences, the author has carried out anexperimental study in an experimental class. The result of the study proves that the pupils'interest in English has been greatly enhanced and their English level improved as well. Thisstudy has enriched the practice of the theory of multiple intelligences in English teaching inprimary class and helped teachers better understand the theory at the mean time.
