The school sports meetings play an important part in physical education of middleschools and are also the major form of sports competition in the middle schools. Bylaunching the development of school sports meetings, the “fitness” campaign in schoolscan be effectively promoted, the technical levels of students in sports can be improved,the spirits of students in striving, compliance with the discipline, collectivism and senseof honor can be cultivated to achieve certain educational purposes. However, the sportsmeetings of middle schools adopt the conventional mode over years, mainly involvingtrack and field competition, the competition is separated from actual teaching, and thecompetition organization, participation mode and reward system have lagged behindapparently the modern physical education reform and actual needs for students’ physicaland mental health. How can the sports meetings of middle schools be reformed anddeveloped to adapt to the new situation of the modern physical education reform, so asto fully realize the overall function of the school sports meetings? This paper studies thecurrent situation of sports meetings of middle schools in Suzhou based on such researchmethods as the literature, interview, questionnaire, mathematical statistics and, logicanalysis, in order to reveal the problems and reform causes, propose thecountermeasures for reform and development and provide ideas and reference forreform of the sports meetings of middle schools in Suzhou.Research results:1. The sports meetings of middle schools in Suzhou are held annually and mostlylast1-2day(s), with traditional track and field sports events as major content, theparticipating rate of students is about50%, the competition rules are determined mainlybased on combination of track and field competition rules and actual conditions, the funds are raised by schools themselves, and only a small amount of funds is provided byhigher authorities. The management of schools prior to and after sports meetings isgood but schools are closed during sports meetings.2. The majority of physical education teachers of middle schools in Suzhouconsider it necessary to launch sports meetings. The top five purposes of sportsmeetings are: enriching the students’ after-school life and cultivating their interest insports; creating good cultural atmosphere for sports; developing the capabilities ofcompetition, interaction and collaboration; deepening the physical education andextracurricular activities; and improve the physical fitness of students and easing theirpressure in study. The effects of physical exercise of students prior to and after sportsmeetings can last1-2week(s).3. Students of middle schools in Suzhou generally believe that it is meaningful tolaunch sports meetings and they like sports meetings. The top three participatingpurposes are: collective honor, collective cohesion and fitness. The top threeparticipating motives are: school sports meetings are lively and meaningful, there aresports they like and are good at, and the pressure in study can be alleviated. The topthree causes for unwillingness of students to participate in school sports meetings are:they do not like sports and are not good at any sports; they are afraid to lose and affectresults of the class as a result of poor performance in sports; and there are no sports theyare interested in. The average rate of selection of students in competition sports theylike is less than50%, indicating that it is necessary to reform the school sports meetings.4. Countermeasures for reform and development of the school sports meetings ofmiddle schools in Suzhou include: strengthening the awareness of schools to reform thesports meetings and accelerating the reform and innovation of the school sportsmeetings; changing the single competition purpose of the school sports meetings andfocusing on the participation and fitness; changing the single type of the school sportsmeetings into comprehensive types; changing and enriching items of the school sportsmeetings; reforming the competition mode of the school sports meetings to reflect the principles of equality, fairness and impartiality; and reforming the competitionrewarding system of the sports meetings of middle schools and increase collective andindividual rewards.
