Domestic violence between married couples or lovers has become a serious social issue on a global scale and has garnered the concern of the international community. Since the90s, along with many countries in the world which have placed greater emphasis on solving the issue of domestic violence, Japan has significantly strengthened its research efforts in this area. The Japanese government has taken a series of counter measures to help prevent violence between men and women.A majority of the prior studies on domestic violence drew conclusions and offered solutions based on the analysis of cases involving male perpetrators and female victims. Only a few studies had female perpetrators and male victims. By using these prior researches as a foundation, this paper aims to rethink the issue of domestic violence by using statistical and sociological methods. This paper intends to investigate and analyze the reasons for Japanese domestic violence and ultimately offer a countermeasure to the issue by collecting research data from Cabinet Office and investigations from local governments. This research paper will be divided into three main sections:the introduction, body and conclusion. The Introduction will outline the historical background of violence between men and women, the prior studies conducted in this area as well as the relevant research methodologies. The main body of the text will be further divided into three chapters. The first chapter will offer a summary and analysis of the current situation regarding domestic violence in Japan from the data gathered through the investigation. The first section of this chapter will highlight the similarities between the cases in the report while the second section will emphasize the contrasting elements. The second chapter will discuss the main causes of violence between men and women. The first section will investigate the social and personal factors of the involved parties which may cause domestic violence. Social factors encompass economic factors and traditional values. The economic status of men plays a major role in domestic violence cases. Some researchers believe that men living in poverty are more likely to channel their anger and dissatisfaction of their social status into acts of violence against their spouses. Traditional values refer to the fact that men traditionally play a more dominant role than women. Instances of domestic violence become more apparent in households which strictly abide by this traditional value. Personal factors of perpetrators can include childhood environments, jealousy, mental disorders, antisocial personalities, communication problems, and alcohol and so on. Section two will discuss the pioneering research on domestic abuse cases involving women perpetrators and male victims. An analysis on the reasons of these acts will be conducted from the results of these research reports. Female violence against men can stem from external factors such as poor social economic conditions and low-income husbands, but a large part of the reason can originate from the women themselves such as violent extremist character traits. Furthermore, the lack of effective social support for male victims can lead to greatly intensified cases of abuse. The third chapter will focus on the possible countermeasures for domestic violence. The first section will describe the inception of the "Japan Domestic Violence Prevention Act", its contents and also its shortcomings. Section two will discuss countermeasures presented through the perspectives of both the perpetrators and victims of domestic violence. Finally, this paper will present the study on violence between men and women in Japan as a valuable point of reference for solving similar issues in China.
