Every time we talk about sports, we can’t help to think of the body. There is aclose relationship between body and sports. In the process of cognizing body in sports, dualism has a far-reaching influence, so people always think body in sports on the twoangles of body and soul. This way of thinking of body promotes the development ofsports, but it also limits sports for further development.Mind-body dualism divides people into body and mind, and the position of mindis higher than the position of body. Influenced by dualism, it makes the body slowlyfading out of people’s vision because of the pursuit of soul. With the deepening ofunderstanding of the body, the defects of dualism become more and more obvious. We have to jump out of dualism to get further understanding of sports. MerleauPonty’s concept of the phenomenology of body provides us a new vision. This article elaborated Merleau Ponty’s concept of the phenomenology of body, and explained the concept of the phenomenology of body: the human’s body is asurvival existence, consciousness is the ability of the body, my body and the worldconstitutes an overall structure through consciousness, we experience the worldthrough our bodies and understand the world through the consciousness, and worldcould be existed through our body. Thus, we see that the body and consciousness isnot separated, on the contrary, the body and the mind are as a whole. This monismcould have a better understanding of sports. We can find from the Olympic Games that running, jumping, shooting, swimming, confrontational competition and so on belong to sports. Positively, wecould clearly understand all of these events in sports. But there are also some bodymovements which we could not give them clear definition. At the same time, we donot know whether they belong to sports or not. But some controversial argumentexists in this phenomenon, for example, we still could not figure out whetherelectronic sports and chess belong to sports. In order to make the body movementhave the same meaning of the sports activities, firstly there must be some substantialand meaningful contents in the movement; secondly, this activity should have a clear goal; finally, we must base this body movement on the basic living form, and in thisprocess the people should finish corresponding activities initiatively. Because theworld we live in changes rapidly, the basic forms and skills of our body activitieshave increased a lot so far which presents a varied trend, therefore, a wide variety ofsports will come to our society.Merleau Ponty’s concept of the phenomenology of body provides us a new visionto understand the definition of the sports activities. This new conception about thedefinition of our body may change our viewpoint which is based on the dualismSports theoretical system. And Merleau Ponty’s concept of the phenomenology ofbody may have a profound significance in the expression of the technical term and thethought of our daily life. Therefore, the sports area should pay attention to this kind ofcircumstances.
