Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is a relatively new and rapidly developing technology; it has a wide range of applications including environmental monitoring, agriculture, public health, and military affairs. At the same time, however, WSNs also presents greater risks and security. Authenticated broadcast, enabling a base station to send commands and requests to low-powered sensor nodes in an authentic manner, is one of the core challenges for securing wireless sensor networks. Now, there are many mature broadcast authentication algorithms. However, due to limited computing ability, power supply, storage space and communication ability of sensor nodes, the effects of these algorithms are not satisfactory in practice. Designing an appropriate authentication algorithm for Wireless sensor networks become the key to secure communication. The paper introduces the basic characteristics and security issues of wireless sensor networks, and then, analyses the flaws of several typical broadcast authentication algorithms and characteristics of ECDSA algorithm. The paper compares the typical algorithms and ECDSA, the conclusion is that the algorithm based on ECDSA is more suitable for wireless sensor networks. In this paper, ECDSA algorithm has been studied and improved, the improved algorithm (E-ECDSA) improves the original algorithm from two aspects. First, by using inversion replacement algorithm, the inversion time can be reduced; second, by using new point multiplication algorithm, complex point multiplication is avoided. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show the improved ECDSA algorithm can promote the operation speed effectively with the same authentication intensity. In this paper, all algorithms have been implemented on TinyOS simulator, simulation results show that the new algorithm provides higher security performance and faster certified speed under the condition of meeting the resource-constrained characteristics of wireless sensor networks.
