Foam materia ls, mean materia ls cons ist of a series of cells whic h are madeof solid struts or plates, belong to typical cellular materia l. Foam materia ls haveadvantages like low relative dens ity, high relative strength, low weight, soundinsulation, heat insulation and good penetration. That’s why it has widedeve lopment trend on industry. The unique microcosmic structures of foa m bringthe question that the properties of foam are hard to predict. This makes the studyof mechanics properties of foam much more important. The thesis uses math software to construct the models of foam, automate theprocess of modeling work. Then it stud ies the elastic properties and fracturetoughness of random open-cell and c losed-cell foam us ing finite ele mentanalysis. From the study, it shows that e lastic properties of random foamconverge with increase of model s ize a nd degree of rando mness. Relativemodulus of closed-ce ll foam and relative density are close to linearly correlatedwhile modulus of open-cell is square of relative density. Both Poisson’s ratiosand re lative density are close to linearly correlated. Mode I and II fracturetoughness of closed-cell foams are respectively bigger than open-cell foamswhile two models are weaker than foams with tetrakaidecahedral unit ce lls us ingsame parameters. The ma in purpose of this study is to discuss the feasibility of using randommodel to simulate foams, provide reasonable simulated results for follow-upresearch work and ease the work of experimenta l work.
