Shale gas is mainly exist in the dark mudstones or high carbon shale, adsorption or free state as the main mode of existence of natural gas accumulation. Global shale gas resource potential is huge, the world’s major countries and regions of shale gas resources in accelerating the exploration and development of shale gas. China has good formation and enrichment of the geological conditions of shale gas, the development prospect is broad, according to preliminary calculation of shale gas resources in China is about (15~30)×1012m3.Qaidam Basin is the important coal-bearing basin and petroliferous basin in Qinghai province, to carry out the investigation and evaluation of shale gas in the Qaidam Basin can reevaluate and acquaint the prospect of Qaidam Basin oil and gas resources, and promote the exploration and development of shale gas, which can increase our energy reserves and natural gas supply, optimize energy structure, and relieve emission reduction pressure. In this paper, reservoir-forming conditions of shale gas are researched by taking organic-rich dark mudstones on coal measure strata of Jurassic Xiaomeigou Formation, Dameigou Formation and Shimen Formation in Qaidam Basin Xidatan region as the key object, adopting field geological investigation and sample analysis method, combining geological, geochemical and drilling subject combination research methods.First, regional tectonic features and evolution of the research area are descripted briefly. Secondly, the paper focuses on the characteristics of source rocks and reservoir preservation condition. It is concluded that organic-rich dark mudstones of the Jurassic coal-bearing formation have good hydrocarbon potential by detailed analysis of lithologic characteristics, depositional environments of mudstone, organic matter abundance, organic matter type, and organic matter maturity of source rocks. On the basis of shale gas hydrocarbon generation conditions, reservoir preservation conditions of shale gas, which include net pay thickness and buried depth of mudstone, physical characterization, mineral composition, pore and fracture are analyzed, all of which are benefit to shale gas accumulation and preservation. Finally, this paper researches gas-bearing characteristics of shale gas. The basic information of gas-bearing characteristic data of shale gas is obtained through full hole total hydrocarbon logging using logging instrument based on typical drill hole and analyzing shale gas at the scene of the field drilling. In accordance with the continental and the sea-land transition facies of shale gas prospective zone and favorable zone optimization reference standard, the Jurassic coal stratum in organic-rich dark mudstones of Xidatan region is advantageous for Reservoir-forming conditions of shale gas and have good exploration prospect.
