Geolink Tools is a negative pulse wireless MWD equipment produced by Sondex Co.(UK). It was introduced into China in the late1990s and widely used after2005. Because its performance is good and cheaper than FEWD Tools produced by Hulliburton Co., many domestic drilling technology services company purchased it. Geolink Tools has played an important role in horizontal well project.However, due to lack of the theoretical analysis of the principles of the work and design of the tools, as well as insufficient application and maintenance experience, sometimes when the tools doesn’t work,we didn’t known what is wrong with it,so we have not good idea of maintenance.The paper makes a thorough analysis of the principles of work and design of Geolink Tools especially for pulse generator, and makes a thorough analysis of the factors affecting the pulse signal and, in particular drilling fluid, and established some mathematical models. Solutions are given in the paper for different tools faults. Finally, a systematic summary of the current mud signal transmission problems and recommendations for improvement is given.
