A mathematic model, novel visual and absorption experiment in this paper was proposed to investigate the end effect area in rotating packed bed (RPB), which was a significant section of packing for mass transfer and the study on it would provide the optimal design of RPB with the theory support. In this paper, based on the fluid flow equation, the movement of liquid jet flow in the end effect area was simplified as two processes. The first was from the jet entering packing to jet collapse and the momentum conservation was followed; the second was from the jet collapse to liquid fully captured by rotating packing and the mass conservation was followed. In the light of the two processes, the quantitative relation between end effect range and various physical quantities was obtained. The visual experiment with the black ink injection and the paper tape wrapped around the outer edge of packing was designed to determine whether the liquid was in the end effect area and its length by observing the shapes of inkblots on the paper. The experiment of absorbing CO2from a mixed gas of N2and CO2with Sodium hydroxide solution was designed to measure the change of the decarbonization rate with the change in thickness of the filler layer, which is to find the length of end effect area.
