| This study adopted the method of multi-scale integrated assessment of societal metabolism (MSIASM) to evaluate societal metabolism of China’s four municipalities in2004-2010by the indicators such as Exosomatic Metabolic Rate, Energy Intensity and Economic Labor Productivity at different organizational scales, as well as Human Activities, Exosomatic Energy Throughput, Added Value and Bio-economic Pressure. Carbon Emissions from Energy Consumption was integrated into this method for the first time to assist the assessment on the ecological aspect and the effect was satisfactory.The results showed that overall development of China’s four municipalities’ societal metabolism was benignant with the steadily increasing of Exosomatic Metabolic Rate and Bio-economic Pressure, and the ceaseless decreasing of Energy Intensity and Carbon Emissions per unit of Energy Consumption. On the Societal Overhead of Human Activities and the Societal Overhead of Exosomatic Energy Throughput, the growth was small on both economic and biophysical aspect. It implied that the industrial structure of China’s four municipalities still need to improve by increasing the labor time and the energy inputs of the service industry and the household department, and they should attach importance to the internal structure of activity time in the household department. In terms of energy efficiency of production, the energy efficiency of the manufacturing industry was worse than the agricultural industry for a iong time in Shanghai, Tianjin and Chongqing. This abnormal phenomenon should cause the attention of relevant functional departments.From the integrated performance of social economic system, each municipality reflected its own developmental characteristic. With the gradual downsizing of the agricultural industry and the high-level deveioping of the manufacturing industry, Shanghai reflected the typical characteristics of the late-industrialization city in China. The development of Beijing showed the close relationship with the preparation of The Olympic Games-strict limitation on the energy investment and the industrial pollution, and the vigorous development on the transport infrastructure construction. Tianjin’s development presented the status of the booming manufacturing industry and the relative lagged service industry, showed the feature of rapid industrialization city in general. The overall development level of Chongqing was lower than the other three cities, embodied the city’s trait during the transformation of industry structure from agriculturalizing to industrialization. With the further research into the industry scale about Exosomatic Metabolic Rate, Energy Intensity and Economic Labor Productivity, this study displayed the prominent role of controlling the energy consumption of the manufacturing industry and the transportation department on rising energy efficiency of production. Meanwhile we should continue to strengthen the low energy consumption and high economic productivity industry such as the financial industry and the computer industry. |
