In this dessertation, we have designed and synthesized novel multi-dentate ligands,4-methyl-2-(((pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)phenol (Lo) and2-(((2-hydroxybenzyl)(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)-4-methyl phenol (L) based on pyridine and phenol derivatives, and their copper (II) complexes Cu-1and Cu-2. Related compounds were characterized using IR, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, NMR, elemental analysis and crystallographic techniques. Their catalytic property on the oxidation of benzylalohol by H2O2was also studied. The crystal structures showed that complex Cu-1is mononuclear, and Cu-2dinuclear with phenolate oxygen atoms as the bridges. The second part of the dessertation is the synthesis and characterization of two copper polymers with a layered structure. We have prepared compounds [Na2Cu(CH3COO)4(H2O)]·H2O (Cu-3) and [Na2Cu(CH3COO)4(H2O)]-MeOH (Cu-4), respectively, using copper acetate and sodium acetate as precursors. The only difference between the two polymers is that there are methanol molecules adsorbed in Cu-4. The two polymerss were characterized using IR, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, elemental analysis and X-ray single crystal diffraction techniques.
