| Polystyrene (PS) is widely used in automotive parts, packaging materials, toys, building materials, electrical equipment, household supplies and so on. However, PS flammable, severe phenomenon of molten drops during combustion, limits its used widely in the field of protection requirements. Therefore, flame retardant modification of PS can greatly expand the application field.Modified the Intumescent Flame Retardant (IFR) in large sizes with silane coupling agent KH-550by mechanical ball-milling. The effects of surface modification on the dispersibility, morphology and particle size were discussed. The results showed that the mechanical ball-milling was more conducive to the size refinement and dispersibility of particles. The reaction mechanism was analyzed and discussed too. The dispersability and compatibility of modified IFR were greatly enhanced.polyphenylene oxide (PPO) and P-N containing intumescent flame retardant (IFR) were used in combination to achieve the purpose of fire-retardancy of PS. X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and limiting oxygen index (LOI) were used to analyze and characterize the sample structure, section morphology, thermal stability and the flame retardant of the performance IFR/PPO/PS composites. And through the analysis of the data, the effects of PPO and IFR on PS charring and flame retardancy were discussed. The results showed that the combination of PPO and IFR could effectively improve the fire retardant performance of composites. Limiting oxygen index reached30.2%for PS with the addition of40%of IFR and20%of PPO, and the formation of charring layer was promoted significantly. Furthermore, carbonaceous foam layer has good thermal insulation, fire-retardant and smoke suppression effects. So the combination of PPO and IFR shows a synergistic flame retardant effect. In summary, the combination of PPO and IFR shows a synergistic flame retardant effect. The use of IFR and PPO as flame retardant enhanced the flame retardant efficiency, and decreased the production cost and simplified the processing condition. |
