Greenhouse gas generated by human activities has impact on global climatechange, which exists as a fact that there have been more and more scientificevidence. As the countries around the world have deeper and deeper cooperationand exchanges on climate change and the associated mitigation action areas, manyscholars have researched on carbon emissions of energy consumption and carbonreduction measures more and more. Existing studies mainly focus on energy savingand emission reduction of various industries, however, statistics from developedcountries in recent years show that the direct and indirect energy consumption ofresidents has exceeded in various industrial sectors so that they become a majorgrowth point of carbon emissions. The city is a center of population concentration and energy consumption, occupies an increasingly large proportion in carbon emissions of householdconsumption, and play an increasingly important role. Yangtze River Delta is thedelta of the Yangtze and Qiantang River into the sea at the impact, including thesoutheast of Jiangsu Province,Shanghai, and the northeastern of Zhejiang Province.Currently, the Yangtze River Delta region whose economic development speed isgrowing fastest and whose total economy is largest, is the most potential economicblocks. The population of the Yangtze River Delta region is one of the mostintensive and is also the most economically developed areas in China. This region’spopulation accounted for11%of our country,GDP up to22%share of the countryin2007. This study is the energy consumption and carbon emission profile ofurban and rural residents in the Yangtze River Delta region, using carbon emissionfactor method and the input-output method to accounting and analysis of carbonemissions generated by household consumption. And then, utilize structuredecomposition analysis method to study carbon emissions factors of residentialenergy consumption. The accounting results show that during the years from1997to2007,in6department,stability of carbon emissions intensity and carbonemissions multiplier factor is different. Industry and Construction industry andTransportation, warehousing and postal service carbon emissions multiplier factor is the biggest and obviously. Carbon emission from residents indirect energyconsumption of the Yangtze River Delta region’s whole city and urban areaincreased year by year, while carbon emission from rural residents indirect energyconsumption decreased, then increased and decreased on the contrary; Thestructure decomposition results showed that the main driving force for the increaseof the indirect carbon emission from residents consumption was the improvedconsumption level. Besides, the rapid urban population growth was also a keyfactor for the increase of the indirect carbon emission from residents’ consumption. It is important to correctly handle contradictions among the development of low-carbon economy and the improvement of level of household consumption andpopulation urbanization. At the present, adjusting residents’ consumption structureand reducing carbon emission intensity are the most effective measures to reducecarbon emission caused by residents’ consumption.
