The Application Of Glass Fiber Reinforced PA Material On Mobile Phone Housing

With the development of communication technology, the material formobile phone housing changes a lot in the past years. PA material has itsown advantage in flow ability and mechanical performance compared totraditional PC/ABS material. Modern smart phone becomes more andmore lightweight, with this trend in design, the glass fiber reinforced PAmaterial are widely used in structural components of mobile phones.The mobile phone industry development and the housing material changesare outlined, the application and advantages of PA material were discussed.Unlike the amorphous material such as PC/ABS, PA material has specificrequirement on machine and processing condition. The suitable processingequipment and the processing conditions for PA material weresummarized.Warpage is one of the key quality issues for glass fiber reinforced PAmaterial in mobile phone thin-wall housing parts. This paper analyzes thedifferent causes of warpage, and discusses the method for improving thewarpage. A general idea to solve the warpage problem is summarized tomake a mobile phone middle frame without any warpage.The weld line is one of the common defects of glass fiber reinforced PAmaterial for smart phone housing application. Usually it has lower strengthand poor appearance around weld line area which brought issues for themobile phone. In order to improve the weldline strength and appearance,Adding overflow tab is proved to be one effective way. Some testing isdesigned to see the influence of the location and size of overflow tab toweldline performance, and finally a optimized solution is provided how to improve the weld line strength via adding a suitable overflow tab.
