With the globalisation which impacts deeply China’s economy and culture,many questions are brought up by cultural convergence. How to maintainand develop our national culture in an international perspective, thismeans not only a measure taken against cultural convergence, but alsothe survival need of our national culture. Meanwhile, as the world’sbiggest producer of ’ready-to-wear’, China is going through itstransition from manufactural industry to a creative industry.Considering clothing a carrier of culture, more importance is attachedto exploring the issue of ’national characters’. Having widely replacedour traditional costumes, western dressing patterns have been so farintegrated into Chinese people’s daily experience. The influence ofChinese traditional apparel is gradually weakening. In such a situation,,to rebuild the image of our national culture, to promote itscharacteristics, to master the exactness of national character inclothing design with no detriment to the cultural atmosphere of our time,all these are the pivot of the survival and development of China’sclothing in today’s multicultural background.Starting from the westernisation of China’s consciousness of modernapparel as well as its influence, the present article endeavours to setup as background the crossing comparison of the evolution of theconsciousness of Chinese traditional clothing with the development ofmodern clothing awareness in China, and points out the faults of clothingawareness during ten years of the Cultural Revolution in China and theweakening of the awareness of traditional clothing in modern society.Reflections are made on such realistic questions as seriouswesternisation of women’s clothing design ideas and aestheticinclination. Through the in-depth argumentation of method and practicein formal design and the relation of clothing awareness with clothingform, this article expresses the lost national characters and nationalstyle by demonstrating China’s traditional culture and aesthetic formin design, and thus provides the methods and thinking approaches forprolonging and developing China’s traditional clothing awareness and form.
