Breakout is the most detrimental event in continuous casting, which seriously restricts the normal production. It is not only causes the serious economy losing, but also endangers the operator’s security even. One of the effective m ethods to prevent breakout is install the Breakout Prediction System (BPS) on the continuous casting machine. With the fact that three continuous casting machines of TianJinTianGuan Special Steel Making Corporation are all not install the BPS, this paper study on the theory and method of breakout prediction. In this paper, it also suggests the Special Steel Making Corporation install the BPS in the future.At the present time there are a lot of methods of breakout prediction. With the production practice, this paper emphatically study on the thermocouple measurement method based on the temperature measured and friction measurement method based on the withdrawal resistance measured. This paper referenced to the results of researchers at home and abroad. Study contents are as follows:First, analyses the kinds and causes of breakout. With the properties and functions of meniscus, deeply analyses the mechanism of stick breakout, and then brought forward the measures of avoiding the breakout.Second, introduces the knowledge of neural network (NN) and emphatically introduces the theories of BP NN.Third, analyses the logical model and NN model that can realize the breakout prediction by the thermocouple measurement method based on the temperature measuredForth, analyses the mathematical model that can realize the breakout prediction by the friction measurement method based on the withdrawal resistance measured, including power method drove by motor and pressure method drove by hydraulic pressure.Five, programs the NN simulate program with the Matlab software and simulates the thermocouple measurement method and the friction measurement method.
