β-Sialon-corundum composites were widely considered as furnace refractorymaterials. However, there are still many problems in reliability and stability. Thepreparation and properties of Corundum-Sialon-TiN composites by aluminothermicreduction nitridation (ARN) were investigated in this study, which use rutile andquartz as the main raw material. In that way, the addition of TiN to β-Sialon-corundum leads to an improvement in its strength and fracture toughness. The resultshowed as followed. The effects of sintering temperatures on phase behavior of products wereinvestigated in order to analysis reaction mechanism of Corundum-Sialon-TiNcomposites by ARN. The result showed that a small amount of Si3Al3O3N5wasdetected when the temperature rose to1400oC. More corundum, TiN and Si3Al3O3N5were obtained at1500oC. Si3Al3O3N5gradually develop into the typical hexagonalcolumnar crystals. Several Si3Al3O3N5transform into SiAl4O2N4at1550oC. Theoptimizing temperature should be1500oC.The influence of aluminum contents on density, mechanical properties andthermal shock resistance was studied. It showed that with the increase of aluminumcontents, the density, Flexural strength and compressive strength of samples increasedgradually while the porosity decreased. The rest flexural strength after thermal shockalso increased with the increasing of aluminium contents. The highest strengthretention88.83%were obtained by A4. So the optimizing aluminium contents is48.90%.The influence of sintering aids on density, mechanical properties and thermalshock resistance was still investigated. It showed that when adding2.5%Y2O3andLa2O3as sintering aids, the sample got the highest flexural strength which was58.67MPa. The highest rest flexural strength after thermal shock was40.51MPawhich still obtained by sample which added2.5%Y2O3and La2O3as sintering aids. Therefore, adding2.5%Y2O3and La2O3was chosen to be the optimizing sintering aids contents. The slag corrosion resistance of Corundum-Sialon-TiN refractory was studied. Itshowed that after slag erosion for3hours at1500oC, Corundum-Sialon-TiNrefractory in which the ratio of TiN and Sialon was one expressed relatively betterslag corrosion resistance. With the increase of rutile contents, the slag corrosionresistance of the sample weakened gradually. It showed that β-Sialon and corundumcould improve the slag corrosion resistance of refractory. These work can providebasis for studying the new high-performance and low-cost refractories.
