Hypercrosslinked adsorbent resins are recognized as efficient polymeric adsorbents and are used widely in adsorption and separation. In order to overcome the defects of structural heterogeinity and severe tailing in adsorption-desorption of commercial hypercrosslinked adsorbent resins, novel hypercrosslinked adsorbent resin with homogeneous structure was synthesized via Friedel-Crafts postcrosslinking of styrene-bis(p-vinylphenyl)ethane copolymers. Its adsorption properties were investigated.1.1,2-Bis(p-vinylphenyl)ethane (BVPE) was synthesized by Grignard coupling reaction. With AIBN as initiator, toluene and n-heptane as porogen, the copolymer of styrene and BVPE was synthesized by free radical polymerization. The hypercrosslinked styrene-BVPE adsorbent resin (shorted as BVPE resin) was synthesized via Friedel-Crafts post-crosslinking after chloromethylation of the copolymer. The hypercrosslinked styrene-DVB adsorbent resin (shorted as DVB resin) was synthesized under the same conditions. The structure of the two resins were evaluated through analysis of the residual chlorine content, BET specific surface area, FT-IR spectrum and swelling properties. All the experimental data indicated that styrene-BVPE copolymer resin was chloromethylated easier, its chloromethylated products underwent Friedel-Crafts post-crosslinking reaction more completely and the post-crosslinked resin swelling more stable as compared with the performance of the styrene-DVB copolymer resin.2. Adsorption behaviors of phenol and puerarin onto the BVPE resin and the DVB resin were tested in aqueous solution. The static adsorption capacity of the BVPE resin could reach99.41mg/g (wet resin). Compared with the DVB resin, the dynamic adsorption capacity of the BVPE resin is larger, and above99%amount of the phenol adsorbed could be removed. The BVPE resin has not desorption tailing, the adsorption capacity of the recycled BVPE resin also very high, so it can be used for more cycles. Because of the large molecule size of puerarin, both the two resins didn’t reached adsorption equilibrium within2860mm.3. Adsorption properties caffeine and theophylline onto the BVPE resin and the DVB resin were studied in aqueous solution. The static adsorption capacity of the BVPE resin can reach155.14mg/g and88.61mg/g (wet resin). The dynamic adsorption capacity of caffeine and theophylline of the BVPE resin were both significantly better than the DVB resin. Caffeine and theophylline absorbed on the BVPE resin can be eluted more easily. The desorption peak is more concentrated, the adsorption capacity of the recycled BVPE resin is higher than the recycled DVB resin.
