Because of high strength and lighter self-weight, carbon fiber composite materials, which began to be used in bicycle design and manufacture from1970s, has been recognized by public with great interests. With the technical development and low price, the applying and study of carbon fiber composite bicycle is improved dramatically.As a result of such impressive physical characteristics, the carbon fiber composite component has been widely applied and can meet the strength and weight requirement of racing bikes.However, because of the complex structure of bicycle wheel and the tough requirements of "V" brake, there are still many problems. In order to enhance the heat resistance and friction performance of bicycle wheel aninsulating type friction resistant layer was studiedbased on the modifiedresin. The layer can enhance the rim heat proof performance and friction resistance.Fundamental research of heat resistant epoxy resin had been done.Characteristic temperatureis obtained by extrapolation method and determined the resin curing process. This kind of resin has good mechanical properties, which laid a foundation for subsequent resinmodification.On the basis of heat resistant epoxy resin system, because of the characteristic modification caused by inorganic filler particles, the viscosity of resin increased and the resin gel time presented a general decrease. To some extent, the addition of diatomite filler promotes the resin curing and reduces the curing temperature. Small amount of extra filler can improve the performance of resin casting body. However, with the increase of filler, it could easily reunite in the resin. Micro defects caused by the overmuch filler led to a reduction of the strengthof the resin. Thus the mechanical properties of casting body weaken slightly with the increase of the filler.Based on the resin modification, by the usage of the diatomite-modified resin basalt fiber composite material, relative thermal and friction properties were researched.Through the study of composite thermal properties, one point should be highlighted. Compared with orgin resin/carbon fiber composites, diatomite-modified resin/basalt fiber composites presented a more obvious decrease when the diatomite filler content increased.According to the research, with the increase content of diatomite filler, the frictional resistance was reduced and the friction coefficient was increased mildly. Under the water condition, the friction mechanism changed sharply. Furthermore, the friction coefficient and the wear extent increased dramatically.Based on the above research, compared with ordinary resin/carbon fiber composites, the diatomite filler modified resin/basalt fiber composites have better heat insulation effect, and it can work in higher temperature for a long time. To some extent the composite can improve the safety and service life of bicycle wheel under the condition of high temperature and friction of train operation.
