Five-axis CNC machine tool can process complex curved surface parts, and high-endfive-axis CNC machine tool is a representative of the highest levels of the state machinerymanufacturing industry. In the paper, focusing on researching the error modeling theory offive-axis CNC machine tools, and discussing the advantages and limitations of variousmethods for error testing and the error compensation, a new method to detect and identifythe geometric errors of the machine translation axis and rotation axis is proposed. Theresearch object of the paper is the five-axis CNC machine tool, the geometric errors data ofthe machine tool is measured and the positioning errors are achieved, which provide theaccurate data for the error compensation. The basic theory and method of errorcompensation is researched.The kinematic theory of multi-body system which is more universal, more clearly formodeling ideas is selected for the better versatility, from a variety of the errors modelingtheory as the theoretical basis for modeling. The error sources which impact the precisionof machining are analyzed, the geometric errors of machine in translation axis and therotation axis are the main object of the study. The stationary and motion error matrix arelisted between the adjacent body of machine, then37error models of the geometric errorwhich include translation axis and the rotation axis are established, the spatial positionerror expressions of the cutter forming point is listed, and posture error expression of thecutter is inferred.Some kinds of the typical geometric error identification method such as9-line methodand12-line method are further studied, the advantages and disadvantages of variousmethods are analyzed from the point of view of practical application. In the mean time, thelimitations of these typical of traditional errors identification methods for non-FXYZmachine are cited. The geometric error detection method for CNC machine is given whichbased on the Renishaw laser interferometer. Now the research of the detection of Machine tool rotation axis is less and not enough in-depth, so the new method to identify of allgeometric errors in the all6rotation axis is also proposed.The linear and angular errors of five-axis CNC machine tool in three translation axesare measured by using Renishaw XL-80laser interferometer. The spatial position error ofeach measurement point is obtained by substitute the measured error data into geometricerror model of five-axis CNC machine, in order to verify the correctness of the model, andanalyze the error element’s impact on the machine position error. The research in errorcompensation theory and method is to provide accurate data for improving the precision ofCNC machining.
