This paper mainly studies the control method of STATCOM,which is used toregulate the point of common coupling (PCC) voltage of power electronics system.Firstly, the mathematical model of STATCOM is presented in the dq rotatingcoordinate based on the basic curcuit law and Park transformation. Secondly,voltage and current double closed loop control system is adoped in the STATCOMcontrol. In order to inprove the accuracy and response speed of the control, thecurrent loop is decoupled.The particle static optimizatio (PSO) algorithm is introduced to the STATCOMsystem, which is a nonlinear system with strong coupling variables. A fixed-gain PIcontroller is first designed under the heavy load condition.Then, in order to inprovethe robustness of the control system, a self-tuning PI controller is designed. A PSOalgorithm considering the best particle gains,the best golbal ganins, and previouschange of gains is applied to achieve the desired PI controller gains when the load isvarying or the power system is disturbed. The system responses of the PSOself-tuning controller are compared with those from the fixed-gain PI controller. Thesimulation results for a system with different loads verify the effectiveness of thePSO self-tuning controller for a STATCOM.The dSPACE hardware-in-loop platform is introduced to the STATCOMphysical experiments. Making full use of the dSPACE’s capability, which includesautomatic code generation and on-line parameters tuning, reduced the difficulty ofthe controller design. Moreover, the dSPACE can record a large number ofexperimental data, which helps the controller designer to analyze the effectivenessof the control algorithm, and earn the optimal parameters. The course of analysingexperiments data helps to raise designer’s level. The physical experiments shows thesuperiority and effectiveness of the PSO algorithm in the regulation of voltage.
