With the development of the urbanization and economic in China, the transportation industry has been rapid development. As a result of the special traffic environment in our country, signal intersections with mixed traffic flow is ubiquity and the traffic channelization in intersections are very unreasonable in our country. Researching on the optimization of traffic channelization at signal intersections under mixed traffic flow conditions has a important theoretical and practical significance which can maintain the traffic order of intersection, solve the problem of traffic congestion, create safer traffic environment and reduce the traffic accidents.By analyzing the distribution and control method of conflict points at signal intersections under mixed traffic flow conditions, this paper presents a method to reduce conflict points which considering the combination of time and space. And then this paper analyzes the traffic characteristics of mixed traffic flow and the reason of the traffic problems. According to the road traffic volume, the design capacity of the road, the design speed of the road, the signal control of the intersection and the basic principles of intersection channelization, this paper presents a method of calculating the number of intersection lane. Then it presents a method of setting the number and width of the entrance lane and the exit lane of intersections, a method of setting the widen of left-turn and right-turn at entrance lane with the calculating of the widen length, and a method of setting related facilities for non-motorized vehicles and pedestrians. All these researches providing a theoretical basis for the optimization of intersection channelization. After that this paper puts forward a reasonable evaluation of the intersection channelization and a whole channelization process. Finally, this paper proposes a reasonable improvement measures of a actual channelization which related the intersection’s geometric characteristics and traffic characteristics for giving a practical significance about the optimized design of traffic channelization at signal intersections under mixed traffic flow conditions.
