Chinese Sweetgum can secrete a resin with aromatic smell when its trunk was injured.These kinds of traumatic excretion were called the Chinese Sweetgum Resin. It is a hugepotential resource of drug and chemical industry. This paper is study on the process ofdecolorization of Chinese Sweetgum Resin and its composition and structure from Guangxiprovince of China, and the heavy metals contents were also detected. Main results aresummarized as follows:Steam distillation after dissolving and washing the Chinese Sweetgum Resin, the process ofDecolorization of Chinese Sweetgum Resin from Guangxi province of China was studied. Itdemonstrated that the preliminary treatment of Sweetgum Resin can effectively improve thecolor grades of Sweetgum resin. Moreover,the addition of antioxidants adding antioxidant canprevent darkening the color effectively during the distillation process of Sweetgum resin. Theresult showed that the optimum process conditions are as follows, using Chinese Sweetgumessence oil as solvent with Sweetgum essence oil/Sweetgum resin of2:1(m/m), washing filteredSweetgum resin with distilled water for4times with water/Sweetgum resin of4:1(m/m). Thewashed Sweetgum resin was distilled by atmospheric steam distillation at130℃~140℃for30minutes, and then distilled by vacuum steam distillation for10minutes. The color grades ofSweetgum resin was6which is much better than12that distilled by atmospheric steamdistillation without dissolving and washing. The softening point of Chinese Sweetgum Resin is131℃, the acid value is53mg·g-1, the saponification value is104mg KOH·g-1.The pre-examination results of chemical components detection showed that the ChineseSweetgum Resin contained volatile oils, organic acids, saponins, cardiac glycosides, steroids,alkaloids and coumarins. Amino acids, sugars, phenols, tannins, flavonoids, anthraquinones werenot been detected.The separation of the Chinese Sweetgum Resin using pressure gradient of the silica gelcolumn chromatography method. The resin contains about15%~20%bornyl cinnamate and10%~15%cinnamyl cinnamate, its molecular structure and components of content has alreadybeen determined. The resin contains about10%~15%terpene ester compounds, the structure wasdifficult to determine because its instability. It also contains about40%~50%pentacyclictriterpenoid acid, its structure will been determined after the separation. After saponification ofthe resin, acidic components by60%and neutral components by40%were isolated. Heavy mental test indicated that there was only trace amounts of lead (0.10mg/kg) in theresin, and its content is much lower than the standard limit, up to the standard of edible gradenatural resin. The rest of heavy mental were not been detected.
