The genus Cudrania, belonging to the family Moraceae, had6species worldwide, distributed from Oceania to Asia. There were5species and1variety in China. C. tricuspidata, mainly distributed in North, East, Central South and Southwest provinces of China, represented the most commonly used species in the genus Cudrania and was widely used for the treatment of tuberculosis, jaundice, bruises, malaria, mumps, and hepatitis embolism. In the first part of this thesis, the chemical constituents of the Cudrania genus were reviewed. In the second part, as guided by cytotoxic activity, the petroleum ether extract and the CHC13fraction A-E of roots of C. tricuspidata showed potent cytotoxicity against HepG2and Bel-7402cells in vitro by the method of MTT.In the third part, a new compound cudrastilbene (1) was isolated from petroleum ether extract and CHCl3fraction A-E by various column chromatography techniques, together with14known compounds, namely, cudraflavanone B (2), cudraflavanone D (3), cudraflavone C (4), naringenin (5), steppogenin (6), artocarpesin (7), genistein (8),6-prenylapigenin (9),6-prenylnaringenin (10), aromadendrin (11),1,3,6-trihydroxy-4-prenylxanthone (12), cudraxanthone L (13),1,3,5-trihydroxy-4-(3-hydroxy-3-methylbutyl)xanthone (14), and oxyres-veratrol (15), which were established by detailed interpretation of extensive spectroscopic data.In the forth part, all the15isolates were screened for their cytotoxicity against6human tumor cell lines i.e. HepG2, Bel-7402, SGC-7901, HCT-116, A549, Hela, and one normal human liver cell line L02by MTT method, using taxol as positive control drugs. The results showed that compounds1-4、9、10and13all had selective inhibitory cytotoxicity against HepG2and Bel-7402, and compound13and4demonstrated the strongest cytotoxic activity against all tested cell lines.
