Objective: There are three purposes of this study: First, to explore the attitude and opinions whichthe alternative and complementary therapy can be used in the pain controlling between medical staff andcancer patients. Second, to investigate the cognition of cancer patients perceived in pain related knowledgewho are in hospital, analyze the influence factors, and ask the patients which aspect they want to know andhow they are willing to learn about it. Third, to make out the intervening measure based on the previousresults and put it into effect, then investigate the effect of alternative and complementary therapy in paincontrolling. Methods: Firstly, the interview objects were found in the medical staff and cancer patients. Afterthey agreed to join the interview, they would talk about their opinions on alternative and complementarytherapy which was used in pain controlling by semi-structured interview.14medical workers and12cancerpatients were interviewed per1-2times until we collected enough information. Then we collected topiccontent from the interview recording by content analysis, found out the similarities and differences betweenmedical staff and cancer patients by continuous comparing. Secondly, when we know the attitude of cancerpatients, we made out a questionnaire about the cognition of pain to patients with cancer. Then weinvestigated200cancer patients, knew the current situation about patients’ knowledge of drugs andnon-drug therapies, analyze the influence factors of cognitive level. We also found out the content andforms which patients wanted to know about drugs and alternative and complementary therapy. It was aguidance of nursing intervention which would provided to patients later. Thirdly, a total of96cancerpatients who chosen by using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) were recruited and randomly divided intotwo groups. In addition to routine care, patients in the experimental group received complementary andalternative therapy such as cognitive behavior intervention, music therapy, massage, relaxation trainingonce a day and40-50minutes per time, the therapy lasted for2weeks. Patients in the control group onlyreceived the routine care. Pain were measured repeatedly every two days by NRS, pain effect afterintervention was measured repeatedly on the day7and14by using Chinese version of the brief pain inventory(BPI-C). Finally, the data was input into a database and using SPSS17.0for statistical descriptionand analysis. Statistical description was analyzed by—x±s, other data was analyzed by T-test, ANOVA,-test and Logistic regression.Results:①The topic which collected from the interview of medical staff included the effect ofpain controlling, implementation condition and the methods of evaluation. The patients with cancerconcerned about the effect, economic burden and their post-discharge medical care.②The questionnaireinvestigation found that the rate of pain in hospital was70.2%, people mainly suffered from chronic painwhich could be tolerated. In188patients,134persons were totally not know the pain-related knowledge,68(36.2%) patients would tell doctors their pain symptoms when they suffered from chronic pain,65(34.6%) patients choosed to tolerate when they exsisted the same symptoms. The influence factors wereculture degree, pain symptom and the time when they suffered cancer. What they typically wanted to knowwere the non-drug therapies(71.3%), the methods of choosing pain drugs(70.7%) and the principle andmethods by which doctors controlled pain(58.5%), and so on. The good ways they learned knowledge werehealth education by paramedics(66.5%) and read health notes by themselves(22.9%).③There were notsignificant differences in the age, profession, types of cancer, the time of suffered cancer, pain degree andpain influence score between the two groups(P>0.05) before the nursing intervention. There weresignificant differences in the pain influence factors between the two groups after the intervention(P<0.01).It existed a linear relationship between pain score and the time, pain score of the intervention groupdeclined(P<0.01).The control group didn’t have such linear relationship(P>0.05). There were significantmain effects of time (P<0.01) and groups (P<0.01) in pain degree, influence score and degree ofsatisfaction, as well as an interaction effect between group and time (P<0.01).Conclusions:①The medical staff and cancer patients all agree that the alternative andcomplementary therapy could be used in pain controlling, and they also are willing to try this new way.②Patients’cognitive degree of pain-related knowledge is a little low, it is affected by patients’culturedegree, pain level and the time of suffering cancer. The patients hope to learn much pain-related knowledge by health education from paramedics.③Complementary and alternative therapy can reduce the pain effectsuch as in daily life, alleviate pain as well as has a satisfactory effect in pain thrapy and nursing services forthe cancer patients with chronic pain can be tolerated.
