Hydrogen sulfide(H2S)is the third member of the family of endogenousgaseous transmitter after nitrogen monoxide (NO) and carbon monoxide (CO). It hasextensive biological effects. In recent years, endogenous production and the molecularmechanisms for the cellular effects of H2S and its pathophysiological significance havebeen studied. Abnormal metabolism and functions of H2S contribute to or participate inthe pathogenesis of many diseases. The current article provides an overview of thebiological characteristic and pathophysiological importance of H2S. The relationshipbetween H2S and diabetes mellitus and the mechanisms for the cellular effects of H2S arealso recapitulated, including the roles of H2S in the regulation of pancreatic cell apoptosis, insulin release of β-cell and insulin resistance. A deeper research of the effects of H2S inthe pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus and its complications will pave a way for futuredesign of novel pharmacological and therapeutic interventions for diabetes mellitus.
