Objective: To investigation the effect of carbon fiber belly board on volume anddose distribution of normal tissue around the pelvic organs in patients with rectalcancer undergoing postoperative simple intensity-modulated radiation therapy andradiation toxicity reaction. Methods: This study enrolled20patients with rectal cancer who had undergoneprior pelvic operation, take20patients all applied the belly board with prone positionwere defined group A and others applied the vacuum bag with prone were definedgroup B, patients in both group underwent two sets of CT scan, all the patientsreceived simplified intensity modulated radiation therapy planning design, and theprescriptive radiation dosage of95%of the PTV(Planning Target Volume) targetvolume was45Gy/25times. compared between the two groups PTV, small bowel, bladder dose volume histogram. Randomly choosing10patients from the20patientsinto belly board (group A1) and vacuum bag (group B1) with radiotherapy, respectively. To observe and recorded acute radiation reaction of two group patientsduring radiotherapy procedure. Results: No difference between group A, B was found of total Planning TargetVolume, small intestine volume and bladder volume(P>0.05), The mean dose ofsmall intestine and bladder, the volume of small intestine irradiated at10-100%doselevels and the volume of bladder irradiated at30-100%dose levels were significantlydecreased in group A comparing to group B(P <0.05).End of radiotherapy, thehemoglobin fell by19.9g/L and25.9g/L in group A1and group B1,respectively,. No patientstermination of radiotherapy owing grade3degrees gastrointestinal adverse reaction. Conclusions: The application of carbon fiber belly board can more effectivereduce the irradiated dosage and volume of small intestine and filling of bladder inpatients with rectal cancer undergone postoperative Simple intensity-modulatedradiation therapy, Hemoglobin decreased slowly, So that it is worth in clinicalapplication.
