Objective Obesity is closely related to diabetes mellitus (DM),and obesity is divided into different types according to different criteria, different indexes of obesity and the associations of DM are controversy.The study examined the epidemiological characteristics of overweight and obesity among the population in Anqing rural areas,discuss the relationship of DM,including body mass index(BMI), waist circumference(WC),waist-to-hip ratio (WHR).To control the progress of the rural population obesity prevalence,and further provide a scientific basis for prevention and control the occurrence of DM. Methods The participants who were enrolled in2011at a cross-sectional survey in Anqing and the surrounding communities were investigated. Multivariable Logistic regression model was used to investigate the association between BMI or WHR and DM (diabetes mellitus). Results A total of2890participants were included in final analysis, their FBG level was (5.8±1.5) mmol/L. The prevalence of DM were9.9%. The proportion of BMI≥24and BMI≥28in men were17.3%and2.5%,BMI≥24and BMI≥28in women were28.4%and5.2%.The proportion of WC≥85cm in men was21.1%, WC≥80cm in women was44.6%; The proportion of WHR≥0.90in men was40.6%, WHR≥0.85in women was63.3%.Individuals were divided into three10-year groups,BMI,WC and WHR were at the hightest levels in50~60years old group in men. BMI was at the hightest levels in50~60years old group in women. In the overweight group(BMI≥24),the proportions of men with WC≥85cm or WHR≥0.9were75.3%,88%;among women the corresponding proportions were89.2%,89.2%. In the obesity group(BMI>28),the proportions of men with WC>85cm or WHR≥0.9were100%,92.1%;among women the corresponding proportions were98.6%,93.1%.The levels of FBG and the prevalence of DM in general obesity or abdominal obesity were higher than those normal people. After adjustment for age and sex,BMI is associated with DM in total population and in men. WC and WHR are associated with DM. After adjustment for age,sex, total cholesterol, triglycerides, diastolic blood pressure and systolic blood pressure,BMI is associated with DM in total population and in men(OR=1.05,95%CI:1.00,1.09; OR=1.09,95%CI:1.02,1.16).WC and WHR could increase the risk of DM. After adjustment for age,sex, total cholesterol, triglycerides, diastolic blood pressure and systolic blood pressure,BMI, the multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that WC and WHR are associated with of DM.Conclusions (1) The overweight and*obesity rates of Anqing and surrounding communities were relatively low,but abdominal obesity prevalence was high,and women more than men,have the features of general obesity combined abdominal obesity;(2)The mean values of BMI of Anqing surrounding community people,no matter male or female higher in young people, The mean values of WC and WHR,all higher in young people.Therefore, the health propaganda and education of obesity should promote,early prevention and control,to further prevent diabetes. Abdominal obesity had stronger association with diabetes.
