A Research On The Incidental Vocabulary Acquisition In Online English Newspaper And Journals Reading

Science and technology is changing each passing day, which changes people’slife in a great degree. With the gradual accomplishment and development of internettechnology, the internet has become the fourth media, succeeding the newspaper,broadcast and TV. Meanwhile, the reading habit of people has gradually transferredfrom the traditional newspaper and journals to the online newspaper and journals.Particularly in recent years, an increasing number of English learners prefer to studyEnglish via reading online English newspaper and journals, which makes onlineEnglish newspaper and journals indispensable part of English learning. At present, thedomestic scholars have testified the positive effect of online English newspaper andjournals upon English study. However, most of these studies linger on the influenceupon reading comprehension and inspiration to teaching.Based on the previous studies, guided by the constructivism, this dissertationmade an empirical research on the incidental vocabulary acquisition in the onlineEnglish newspaper and journals reading, which seldom had people studied. Theresearch employs experiment, questionnaire and interview to investigate58Englishmajors from one junior college. With the assistance of SPSS14.0, the results wereanalyzed on several aspects, producing the following conclusions. As a whole, theincidental vocabulary acquisition effect in the online English newspaper and journalsreading is much better than the effect in the traditional English newspaper andjournals, especially on the pronunciation and culture information acquisition aspects;the retention effect of incidental vocabulary acquisition in the online Englishnewspaper and journals reading is superior to the retention effect in traditional papers;Moreover, the incidental vocabulary acquisition effect of high involvement load is more optimistic in the online English newspaper and journals reading environment.This experimental research testified the feasibility and positive effect ofincidental vocabulary acquisition in the online English newspaper and journalsreading, which lays a foundation for the promotion of such an incidental vocabularyacquisition method. At the end of this dissertation, the researcher proposes somesuggestions on how to facilitate the incidental vocabulary acquisition. Hope Englisheducators and learners benefit from it.
