In recent years, with the rapid development of information technology, more andmore western audiovisual works are pouring into China, and the demand onaudiovisual translation is on constant rise. Against such a background, China’s fansubgroups come into being. Fansub groups are groups of amateur translators providingaudiovisual translation for free. US sitcoms translated by fansub groups, with theirhumorous plots, exaggerating performance, and vivid demonstration of westernculture, have attracted a large number of followers.The thesis takes functionalist translation theories as its theoretical foundation tosummarize and analyze the humor translation strategies of US sitcom fansub groups.According to the functionalists, fansubbing is a purposeful activity. The skopos orpurposes of fansubbing determine the translation strategies and methods used byfansubbers. Translation skopos is not only affected by the text type, but also by thefeatures of and relationship between translation participants. By analyzing fansubbers’features, the thesis puts forward thirteen sub-skopos or purposes of fansubbing underfour function categories, all of which contribute to the fundamental skopos ofdelivering or creating humor, and establishes a model for its case study.From the perspective of humor classification and Chinese wording, the thesismakes a case study of excerpted examples from the two US sitcoms of ModernFamily and The Big Bang Theory, sums up eight major strategies and methodsemployed by fansub groups in their humor translation, analyzes the translationfunctions and sub-skopos each of them serves, and proves the applicability offunctionalist translation theories in fansub group’s humor translation of US sitcoms.The four features of fansub groups, the thirteen sub-skopos in their humor translationof US sitcoms summarized according to these features, and the eight strategies andmethods that can serve these sub-skopos are the major findings of this thesis.
