| With the rapid expansion of globalization, cross-cultural communication andinformation exchange become increasingly commonplace. For the sake of meeting theobjective requirements of globalization, there is an urgent need for news to serve morediversified functions. Metaphor abounds in news English in that it affects the vividness, accuracy and the correcting understanding of the readers. In order to make the citizensof each country learn what is happening in the international community, the translationof news has gained more attention. On the one hand, news English is quite differentfrom other types of texts. There should be specific translation methods and translationcriteria regarding the translation of news, especially the translation of metaphor innews; On the other hand, due to cultural diversity, the translation of news is not an easyjob and obstacles and problems may arise due to language difference and the lack oftheoretic guidance in the process of cross-cultural interaction, especially when thetranslation activity involves the proper translation of metaphor. Therefore, thetranslation of metaphor in news acquires specific translation criteria, principles andmethods. As a distinctive language phenomenon, metaphor has gained wide application inmany kinds of texts. For a long time, metaphor has been regarded as a figure of speechor the ornament of human speech. The situation hardly changed until the1980s whenthe publication of Professor Johnson and Lakoff’s landmark work Metaphors We LiveBy pushed research on metaphor beyond the limitations of rhetoric into the sphere ofcognitive studies. According to Johnson and Lakeoff, people’s way of thinking ismetaphorical by nature. This is a completely new turn in metaphor studies. Therefore,we have good reason to believe that the translation of metaphor will produce newtheoretical fruits through the guidance of a new translation theory. An Approach to Translation as Adaptation and Selection by Hu Gengshen waspublished in2004. Later, Hu proposed the concept of Eco-translatology. He, for the firsttime, applied the Adaptation and Selection theory of Darwin to the translation field andput forward the concept of "translator centeredness","translational eco-environment","adaptive selection" as well as "multi-dimensional transformation". According to thetheory of Eco-translatology, the translator is supposed to conduct "adaptivr selection"and "multi-dimensional transformation" on the basis of adapting to the translational eco-environment.This thesis studies the translation of metaphor in news reports from the perspectiveof Eco-translatology. According to Eco-translatology, the translator, who is at the centerof the whole translation process, should conduct "adaptive selection" to the translationaleco-environment and at the same time be engaged in "multi-dimensionaltransformation" which is relatively concentrated on three dimensions: linguistic, cultural and communicative dimension.Under the guidance of translation principles and translation methods, thetranslation of metaphor could find a new soil and thus produce new fruits. The firstmethod is to keep original linguistic form and the metaphorical image and addexplanations if necessary; the second is to change the original linguistic form and keepmetaphorical image so as to reach the purpose of spreading information; the thirdmethod is to abandon both the linguistic form and the metaphorical image andre-express its cultural connotation. This thesis is expected to, on the one hand, enrichthe research on the translation of metaphor; On the other hand, to enlarge theapplication research of Eco-translatology. |
