Research has been conducted to explore the effect of anxiety on languagelearning for a long time. However,the research into the effect of anxiety on languageskills, especially on listening compression are limited. Moreover,in this field, fewresearchers choose vocational college students as their subjects. The present researchtries to study vocational college students’ listening compression anxiety and thestrategies to cope with it.The author adopts the empirical research methods, that is, questionnaires andinterviews. The subjects chosen for the study are109vocational college students inmy school. Through the questionnaire survey, the author has found that the studentsdo experience anxiety while listening. Based on the findings of the interview, theauthor has summarized the basic causes leading to students’ listening comprehensionanxiety:poor concentration, lack of vocabulary, being unfamiliar with thepronunciation and intonation of certain words and sentences, being unable to grasplistening content quickly and accurately, being unable to deal with the fast speed ofthe listening passages, lack of confidence and being unfamiliar with culturalbackground. Four measures for reducing anxiety and workable proposals are putforward, which can help students improve their listening abilities. The four measuresare listed as follows: cultivating students self-confidence; developing the students’knowledge and capability of pronunciation, intonation and vocabulary; selectinglistening materials that interest students; laying emphasis on western culture andencouraging students to pay attention to the latest hot news. The author carries out aone-year experiment which is intended to reduce the students’ listeningcomprehension anxiety. The result of the experiment shows that suggestions offeredby the author are workable and have a desirable effect.
