| The translation task is the short story written by the famous19thcentury American writerMark Twain, a total of more than eleven thousand words. And the paper is based on the task.English Short story is always short in length and compact in content, which enhances itspopularity in translation area, for grasping the theme of it seems easier to Chinese translators.The﹩30,000Bequest is one of Mark Twain’s short stories. With the author’s verification, ithas a few different versions. Two versions are popular in the market: Dong Hengxun’s versionand Zhang Yousong’s version. Both of them are famous translators in the19thcentury ofChina. But they are different in translation style. In the﹩30,000Bequest, Dong’s versionmainly adopts to liberal translation and domestication. He uses an ocean of reduplicatingwords and some Chinese proverbs, which makes the whole story rich and bright, whileZhang’s version mainly prefers to literal translation and foreignization. Large simple wordsgive the readers a natural beauty of lotus coming out of crystal-clear water. However, differentfrom the two translators, the author in this paper, through his variation of the role as atranslator, will illustrate the translation from the perspective of “dominating tone†and try toillustrate some methods like extension, combination, addition, etc. in combination withrelevant challenges in the translating process. Therefore, the significance of presenting theoriginal “dominating tone†of English short story in translation will be valued. The translationof the author, in combination with the theme of the original story and the new perspective ofthe paper, mainly devotes into grasping the protagonists’ psychological condition and innerworld. The author tries to grasping the “eyes†of the whole story, such as the key words,sentences, and contexts, thus to penetrate into the heart of the readers and creates an artisticappeal of “hearing the protagonists, meeting the protagonists, and even being theprotagonistsâ€.This paper is divided into five parts. First, it’s the brief introduction of topic’s backgroundand significance, original author, and the﹩30,000Bequest; Second, it’s a brief processdescription of the report; Third, it’s the theoretical framework and key-point of the report; Fourth, it’s the specific cases illustration of "dominating tone" in translation; Fifth, it’s theconclusion. After this translation practice, the author sincerely realizes that translation is adefinitely difficult work and has a large margin to elevate translating ability. What the authorlook forward to is making some breakthrough in the future. |
