Since China’s accession to WTO, China has continued to enhance the communication and cooperation with other countries. Under such circumstance, China urges to show a brand-new view to the outside world and Chinese people hope to know more about other countries in the world. In order to construct a better platform for news communication, studies of news translation has become increasingly significant and pressing. In the1990s, the Belgian American translation theorist Andr6Lefevere put forward that translation is a kind of rewriting which is manipulated by ideology, poetics and patronage. This thesis tries to analyze the whole process of translation from three aspects of ideology, poetics and patronage on the basis of Lefevere’s theories. Through the textual comparison between translated news in Cankaoxiaoxi(参考消息)during the2012London Olympics and their original ones, the thesis probes into the ideological effects on title rewriting, lexical adaptation and contextual selection, the poetic influences on narrative mode, sentence structure and rhetorical application, and patronage’s impact on choice of materials, invisibility of rival news agencies and translators and other aspects. It is hoped that this thesis can prove the great explanatory power of Lefevere’s theories on news translation as well as the nature of news, i.e., the manipulated discourses.
