Personality And Destiny---an Analysis On Life Of Pi Under Freud’s Psychoanalysis

Recent years’ catastrophic attacks happened in the United States and China, such as SandyHook Elementary School shooting occurred in America in2012, cannot be regarded as simple accidents. Psychological imbalance can surely be the main cause of these anti-society behaviors. How to treat and solve such problem of psychological imbalance and explore the significance of cultural media and to obtain a general and instructive conclusion is the ultimate goal of this thesis.Based on Freud’s psychoanalytical criticism theory of personality development, this thesis, from the interdisciplinary point of view, expounds the family background and social background of the protagonist Pi and his growth in childhood, furthermore, explores the reason why Pi possesses a humorous, perseverant and cheerful personality which plays a vital role in the227adrift days. Accordingly, the thesis puts forward that people’s personality which will contribute a lot to the development of the society or just bring about damages, is closely related to the fact whether his or her own id, ego and super-ego be developed in harmony in childhood. Furthermore, the thesis explores the function of the literary working on posing social and cultural influence on people.During the course of the study, this thesis found that many sociologists are increasingly concerned about the same problem. A variety of the researches accordingly reminds people of the fact that social harmony could not simply rely on power of the society. Children, as the decisive role in the social economic development in the future, whose personality be developed and guided, should not rely solely on education but the joint efforts by the parents, family and society with adequate attention from their birth.
